Yom Hashoah

Yad Vashem, The Holocaust History Museum, Jerusalem, Israel.


	Today is Yom Hashoah, i.e. Holocaust Remembrance Day and a public holiday in Israel. The new Holocaust History Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, was opened in March 2005. We visited this on the last day of our stay in the Holy Land. While photography was not permitted in the history museum, we could do so at the children's memorial, which commemorates the one and a half million children who were murdered in the Holocaust. Isaiah 56:6 And to them will I give in my house and within my walls a memorial and a name (Yad Vashem) that shall not be cut off.

	We saw a lot of the curling type of bread in Israel. We even saw a couple of men stuffing these bread into the boot of their car. Someone in our group said a loaf like that could feed the whole family for the whole day. I wonder what it tastes like - sweet or saltish or tasteless.

	Lots of tourists were roaming around the vicinity of Christ Church Melaka. Not far away, a crowd gathered around this huge lizard. Apparently someone was making money off the tourists, by offering anyone who would pay a small fee to pose with this... thing sitting on your shoulders.

	A floating village where a whole community lives, and works on stilts! It was amazing - walking down lorongs (jetties), passing houses and residences which stood above the sea, and we had breakfast on a floating market where the freshest fish just caught were brought in by the fishermen in their boats.

The Treasury, Petra, Jordan.


	Indiana Jones went inside and found an ancient knight guarding the holy grail. I tried to go in and met with fences and a blank wall. There wasn't anything beyond the impressive facade of the famous Treasury (also known as Al Khazneh) at all. Hmm, hmmmmm! Although it was once believed to hide ancient treasures, it's now decided that it used to be a temple, or a royal tomb.

	At the Workers' Camp in May 2006, we were free in the afternoon to see a few more of the 7,107 beautiful islands of the Philippines. On one of our afternoons off, we went to a Mango festival on Guimaras island, where we had too much to eat. On the second afternoon, we took a boat ride to a nearby island on this boat, and spent the day getting sun-burnt.

Errected around the 7th century AD, the Dome Of The Rock is an Islamic shrine and it stands on the Temple Mount, which is sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians.

	This was taken during a brief visit to the world's largest palace complex on a cool spring day in March 2004. I wanted to see it again in the summer of 2007 but...ooh, the crowds! It looked like the entire 1.3 billion population of China was out in force queuing for tickets, and so we gave up that opportunity.

Rainy Days In Sydney

Perhaps it was a bad time for a vacation in Sydney. It rained incessantly. Well, that didn't bother me much. I could simply find an indoor activity to keep myself occupied. And so I did, at the Australian Museum.

I'd passed the museum the day before and had asked my friend the driver what that massive building was - he who had lived there with his young family for about a year already turned to me with a blank look and said, You know, I have no idea! Oh well, I found out from my guide book what it was soon enough. Museums might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's mine! Especially on a cold, rainy September day Down Under!

And so, when it rained again that afternoon, I told my friend to drop me off at the Australian Museum. Went in without knowing what kind of a museum it was. Was quickly swarmed by loud groups of children in school uniforms. (Actually everywhere we went in Sydney - the Opera House, the harbour, etc there were groups of uniformed kids. Field trips seemed to be a big thing in Australia!) Got out of the groups, and went to buy a ticket.

At the information desk to pick up some brochures, the fellow there who looked like a policeman or a security guard looked me over and asked, Where're you from? Not in an unfriendly or intimidating way, but in a curious sort of way, like he'd never seen an Asian face in the museum before. I told him, and I thought he muttered something like, You may be the first Singaporean I've seen in here...

Ok, point taken. Singaporeans are not very museum-minded.

I soon discovered that the Australian Museum was a natural history museum. Oops, not quite what I had expected! I was looking for a "History of Australia" museum, which would show me displays of the archaeological finds, artifacts and stuff like that, but natural history is ok. No problem!

It didn't matter if it was raining a thunderstorm outside. Within the massive walls, I was soon lost in several impressive exhibits.

The museum's Mission: to increase understanding of, and influence public debate on, the natural environment, human societies and human interaction with the environment.

I found and explored three levels in the museum - skeletons and history of indigenous Australians on the ground floor, a large minerals exhibits on the first floor and lots of birds, insects and Australian mammals on the second floor.

I did not remember seeing any 'No Photography' signs anywhere, and so took a few photos during the tour. Some of the exhibits looked quite unreal, such as the giant crabs I posed next to, but... in a reputable museum, surely those must be real crabs? I soon found out that there were plenty of very real, live gigantic crabs for eating in Sydney's Chinatown! Did we try that... um, no, we settled on the hugest bowls of lucksa (that's how they spelt laksa) for our meals when the time came.

Mountain Goats

	Photo taken from the window of our tour bus as we were journeying from Petra to the Jordan Valley border, to cross into Israel. The mountainside was peppered with sure-footed mountain goats sunning themselves in the middle of the cool afternoon.

The Pyramids

The Pyramids Of Giza, Cairo, Egypt.


	Two of the three pyramids at Giza, together with the Sphinx, are seen here - the Great Pyramid of Khufu (which is the largest single man-made building ever constructed), and the Pyramid of Khafre, son of Khufu. The Great Sphinx, built near Khafre's pyramid, is believed to be a royal portrait of Khafre. During our visit on a cool November morning, we met a great many young people probably out on excursions.

Cut Fruits

	A batch of unidentifiable cut fruits at a fruits stall in the Central Market. The vendor scoops a handful into a plastic bag for you when you pay up a few US cents. Good for a snack after a meal, but foreigners ought not to try this unless you have an iron stomach.
